Creative Writing and Publishing
Students will cultivate their creativity and communication skills to become engaged thinkers about the media they create and participate in, and develop awareness of their role as ethical citizens with an entrepreneurial spirit in writing and publishing. In this course, students follow their writing interests and passions and engage in opportunities to write in a variety of genres that encourage them to experiment with new ideas, concepts, and processes in various communication forms and media. Students will create and manage their own portfolios. All levels of creative writers are welcome to join, whether you are interested in fiction, non-fiction, or simply publication!
The final project each semester is to create a collaborative class anthology that will be published through Amazon and available for purchase. Course fees will pay for your copy of the anthology. Upon the completion of this course, you will be able to call yourself a published author and be able to start developing your writer's resume.
Creative Writing and Publishing 15 (LDC1269)
The course focuses on developing elements of fiction such as characterization, setting, and dialogue; horror writing; microfiction; speeches; elements of poetry; personal author biographies.
Students in the 15 level will be responsible for following publication parameters while they create and edit their work for the class anthology. If you choose to put your piece in the class anthology (there is always the option to opt out), you will now be a published author!
Creative Writing and Publishing 25 (LDC2269)
The course focuses on authentic representation in fiction; screenplay and stage play writing; creative non-fiction; manipulating poetry structures; publishing skills; cover letters for submissions.
Students in the 25 level will be responsible for formatting the anthology. You will be able to add another publication credit to your writer’s resume, as well as a credit for formatting the anthology.
Creative Writing and Publishing 35 (LDC3269)
The course has two streams to choose from:
Independent full-year project: students choose a project that will take the full course to complete, with the intention of having something ready for publication submissions by the end of the semester. Students can choose to create a novella, feature-length screenplay/stage play, poetry chapbook, anthology of fiction/non-fiction, graphic novel, video game script, or any teacher-approved project
Unit-based course: students will study and create postmodernism, cross-genre pieces, and graphic novels, with a focus on preparing for submissions and publishing in the future.
Students in the 35 level will be editors-in-chief for the anthology. You will be able to add another publication credit to your writer’s resume, as well as an editor-in-chief credit.
